What Is Battery Acid?

Battery acid is a liquid fuel that is used in chemical cells or batteries to empower them. Usually, this term is renowned due to lead-acid batteries. The formula or quantity of battery acid is different for different batteries as they have multiple applications. Normally, an automotive car battery has acid that comprises 33-50% of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in water. Usually, standard battery acid has 1.25–1.28 kg/L density, 4.2–5 mol/L concentration, and a mole fraction of 29%-32% sulfuric acid. 

Types of Battery:

There are multiple types of batteries that require adding a specific fluid. The details of different batteries and acids needed are given below.

Conventional:

The conventional battery is the oldest form of battery that is usually the least expensive but requires some effort for initial maintenance. However, this battery is slightly insecure due to corrosive acid.  But the thing is that these cells need some kind of corrosive acid.

Gel:

These batteries are the successor of conventional models. Usually, this battery requires a gel fluid instead of liquid acid. At the same time, they are primarily used as starting batteries, not as deep cycle batteries.

AGM:

The advanced form of starter gel battery is AGM battery. They consist of fiberglass walls that hold the constituents in place. Also, the spill-proof structure does not cause any leakage. These batteries require sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in a suitable concentration.

Lithium:

Lithium battery is an entirely different sort of power source than other batteries. These batteries do not require acid or lead for performing. A powerful collection of lithium-ions do the same job in these batteries. 

Structure And Reactions Of Battery:

Usually, a lead-acid battery comprises two lead plates separated by a fluid containing both water and sulfuric acid. The multiple reactions of charging and discharging make a rechargeable process to keep the battery with optimum performance. The reactions that take place in the battery are given below.

Reaction on positive plate:

PbO2(s) + HSO4- + 3H+(aq) + 2 e- → PbSO4(s) + 2 H2O(l)

Reaction on negative plate:

Pb(s) + HSO4-(aq) → PbSO4(s) + H+(aq) + 2 e-

Combined reaction:

Pb(s) + PbO2(s) + 2 H2SO4(aq) → 2 PbSO4(s) + 2 H2O(l)

What Is The Charging and Discharging Of Batteries?

A battery consists of negative and positive plates. The negative plate consists of lead, while lead dioxide is present in the positive plate.  Concentrated sulfuric acid is present in the electrolyte; this happens when a battery is fully charged. The oxygen and hydrogen in the electrolysis are lost in the battery when the battery is overcharged. You can also add water to the battery to overcome this loss, but this is only available in some batteries.

On both sides of the plate, the lead sulfate is formed on the discharge of the battery. The two lead plates are separated by water in which the battery is fully discharged. When this point occurs, you will find it hard to recover the battery, as the battery is considered dead.
